How Does Laser Vein Treatment Work?

A light therapy, CoolGlide® delivers pulses of concentrated light energy to the targeted veins, damaging the targeted blood vessel without harming the surrounding tissues and skin. The blood vessel closes down and is eventually reabsorbed by the body. Blood flow is redirected to veins deeper below your skin's surface, so there is no concern of disrupting the body's circulatory system or access to adequate blood supply with laser vein treatment.

The laser vein treatment is carried out in short bursts, and patients can have cooling gel packs applied after each session to minimize discomfort. The laser vein treatment device itself also has a cooling tip for increased comfort and works precisely. This makes it a suitable laser vein treatment option for the nose, cheeks, and other areas of the face.

What Can a Laser Vein Treatment Address?

CoolGlide® can treat a broad range of vessels, from tiny superficial veins on the face to larger spider veins of the legs. Note that knotty varicose veins are not good candidates and would require a different treatment strategy. If veins are especially large and/or uncomfortable or painful, they may be a sign of a larger medical issue and should be examined by a primary care physician or a vascular specialist.

The number of laser vein treatments required will depend on the number, color, and size of the vessels being treated. Patients at our New Jersey office often find that one or two treatments are sufficient for veins on the face. More are sometimes needed for leg veins.

Significant improvement is typically seen within two to six weeks of CoolGlide® laser vein treatment. While it is possible for new spider veins to form on the face and body, the veins destroyed by laser vein treatment are usually gone for good. For this reason, laser vein treatment is best considered to be an excellent option for long-term improvement.

For spider veins on the legs, patients may also consider sclerotherapy, which involves the injection of a solution directly into the visible vessels, which eventually causes them to collapse. In time, the collapsed veins are reabsorbed, rendering them less visible.

Talk to the Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care team to find out whether sclerotherapy laser vein treatment or a combination of procedures would be best for you.
