A Revitalizing Cheek Lift In New Jersey

Compare the soft curves of a young person's cheeks to the angularity of an older person's, and it's easy to see how time saps volume from the mid face. As we age, we lose the gentle contours of youth. The cheeks fall and lose volume. The skin sags. With time, our cheeks can assume an aged, hollow appearance. Voluma® at New Jersey's Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care restores natural fullness to the mid face. An innovation from Juvederm®, it is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid facial filler to instantly add volume to the cheek area, with results that last up to two years.

With just one treatment, men and women alike can appear years younger! Results are immediate, and there is little to no down time necessary after a session. You can return to your daily life right away.

What Does Voluma® Do?

Voluma® rounds out your cheeks to correct age-related volume loss and sagging skin. for the cheek and midface area.

Voluma® is the only FDA-approved filler to add volume to the apex or apple of the cheek. Like a non-surgical cheek implant, it gives a subtle lift to the mid face, restoring a youthful curve to the cheek. The lift can also pull up sagging tissue that causes jowls to form lower on the face.

Unlike facial fillers that are injected into the dermal layer of the skin, Voluma® filler sits on the bone, so it will not cause the pouchy "chipmunk cheek" appearance you sometimes see on the red carpet.

The three-dimensional effect of Voluma® filler is apparent from every angle. Your face will quickly appear years younger.

How Does Voluma® Filler Work?

Volume loss in the cheek is caused by the age-related breakdown of collagen and elastin in the dermis (the innermost layer of skin) and from thinning of the fat layer under the dermis. Collagen and elastin are what give skin its form and elasticity. The subcutaneous fat gives it plumpness.

With time and gravity, these internal structures degrade. Although our bodies replace collagen and elastin as they break down throughout our youth, this natural process slows as we age, meaning we lose more than we make. The skin loses firmness and fullness, and the fat pads may shift, creating a saggy or hollow appearance.

Voluma® filler safely and effectively replaces lost fat under the skin with hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule found in the skin, restoring volume to the cheek.

A clinical study revealed that patients who received Voluma® injections reported looking up to five years younger half a year after their initial treatment.

What Role Do Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid Play In The Skin?

As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen is found in just about any structure that needs to be both sturdy and flexible at one time. Injections to replace it contained collagen itself, derived from pigs, cows, or human sources. The animal-based products typically required allergy testing. These days, the industry has mostly moved away from collagen to hyaluronic acid-based fillers.

The carbohydrate polymer hyaluronic acid can also be derived from animal products, such as rooster combs, but Allergan uses non-animal hyaluronic acid in Voluma® and its other fillers.

To create the smooth gel of Voluma®, Allergan uses a "crosslinking" manufacturing process known as Vycross, which essentially weaves together and concentrates the molecules. Its consistency allows for smooth applications and a predictable flow, allowing injectors to work with both precision and speed. Patient comfort is maximized, and satisfaction over the results is high.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

Voluma® treatments typically take 15 to 60 minutes. There is little to no downtime and you can resume most activities immediately after your procedure.

When Will I See Results And How Long Will They Last?

Voluma® gives you immediate results that last up to two years.

Is Treatment With Voluma® Painful?

Discomfort is brief and minimal. No specific care is needed after the treatment, except perhaps for the application of an ice pack. Some patients experience short-term effects, such as redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site, which last no more than a week or so.

How Does Voluma® Differ From Other Fillers?

Voluma® is specially formulated to add fullness to areas of cheeks, which tend to lose volume as a result of the aging process. Because of its design and where our doctors inject Voluma®, you will not get "chipmunk cheeks."

Is One Treatment Enough To Get The Look I Want?

For most patients, one treatment with Voluma® is sufficient to correct age-related volume loss and sagging. Like most fillers, some patients may need additional follow-up treatments to refine their results.

What Is The Cost Of A Voluma® Treatment?

The price of a Voluma® treatment varies depending on the amount of product needed. As part of our consultation, we'll review price with you before we get started.

Voluma® injections at our New Jersey office are performed with a fine needle. Specially formulated with lidocaine (a type of anesthetic) to improve comfort during treatment, Voluma® filler is injected deep into the tissue. A topical numbing cream can also be applied prior to your treatment to minimize the "pinch" sensation.

A single treatment session typically takes less than an hour. Following the injection, you may get a gentle massage in the treated areas and/or apply a cool compress to reduce bruising and swelling. Most patients are able to resume normal activities the next day.

All of the injections are handled by our dermatologists with years of education, training, and experience, as well as a commitment to offering personalized attention with each specialized service. The Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care team prioritizes patient education and interactions to make sure all of your questions are answered, and you come into each treatment, Voluma® or otherwise, with the comfort of understanding.

The most common side effects patients experience from Voluma® include pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, and firmness at the injection sites—all of which are side effects typical of a variety of injections. Usually moderate in nature, these reactions can last two to four weeks and resolve on their own. The most common side effect is bruising. We recommend that you schedule your Voluma® filler treatment accordingly.

Voluma® is shown to last up to two years under optimal conditions. Touch-up treatments may be required to achieve optimal results and to maintain your new look. Patients who choose Voluma® injections again after two years may find that less of the product is required to achieve the same effect.

If for any reason you are unhappy with your results, the effects of a Voluma® treatment are reversible. The filler can be dissolved with a simple injection. However, the likelihood that you'll want to reverse the results of your treatment is exceedingly slim. No patient at our New Jersey office has ever required it.

Voluma® and Juvederm® are made by the same manufacturer, Allergan, and are similar products, but they accomplish different things. Voluma® restores volume to where it is lost in the cheek area.

Juvederm® XC is designed and FDA-approved to treat wrinkles. Specifically, it smooths out lines of moderate or greater severity that form to the side of your mouth and nose, commonly called marionette lines and smile lines (or parenthesis).

Both of these injectable facial fillers are available to patients at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care, where we can go into more detail about the benefits of each and explain what they can do for your face when used separately, together, or even combined with other treatments. BOTOX®, for example, is not a facial filler, but is FDA approved to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead and to the side of either eye.

Meet Our Physicians

As board-certified physicians, we take the time to meet your medical needs and concerns, to listen to you, and make sure you get the care you need.

Other dermal fillers available at Advanced Dermatology & Skin care include Volbella® for smoothing fine lines and plumping lips. Like Voluma®, treatment sessions are quick, and the results are temporary.

Note that Voluma® and other dermal fillers are ideal for adding volume to the skin, but they do not impact pigmentation irregularities or fine lines. Laser skin resurfacing can complement rejuvenated facial contours by revealing fresh skin that otherwise sits hidden beneath a layer of dull and damaged skin cells.

Patients seeking to change their facial contours by addressing flattened, sagging cheeks may also want to consider Kybella®. Like Voluma®, this treatment is an injectable, though unlike the dermal filler, its goal is to reduce fat in the targeted area—in this case, at the neck. Any cosmetic procedure should be performed by an experienced medical professional with an eye for balance and overall aesthetics, ensuring that a treated area will not stand out as appearing to have had "work done," but will harmoniously blend with the surrounding features.

Our team will help each patient to discover the ideal treatment or combination of treatments for achieving a desired look.

Many people may offer Voluma® filler, claiming to be able to quickly and easily bring a youthful look back to your face. When looking for a provider, you should consider the source. While dentist offices and hair salons are now adding facial fillers to their menu of services, choosing a licensed, certified, and trained doctor with experience in focused skin care in general, and Voluma® filler specifically, is one of the best things you can do to make a big difference to your health and beauty.
