Patch Testing in New Jersey

patch-testing

Patch testing is a technique dermatologists use to identify substances that cause persistent skin rashes called contact dermatitis.

In a patch test, tiny quantities of 25 to 150 common allergens are applied to the upper back. Affixed with a special hypoallergenic adhesive tape, the patches stay in place undisturbed for 48 hours. The back is then checked for reactions at a follow-up appointment. Sometimes additional patches are applied.

Once the allergen is identified, rashes often significantly improve with avoidance of exposure.
