First approved in the United States in 1997, laser hair removal technology has been used to safely and quickly remove unwanted hair for nearly 20 years! Our laser is effective on lighter skin tones and can effectively reduce the growth of fine-to-coarse dark hair in most locations—with minimal discomfort. We hear an endless variety of reasons why patients seek this treatment in New Jersey. Laser hair removal can be used to clean up a chin with a few bristly hairs, tidy up a bikini line for the next swimsuit season (and every one after that), save time devoted to shaving every morning, or simply reduce unwanted hair long-term.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by directing a controlled amount of high intensity light toward the hair root, where dark pigment absorbs the focused energy as heat. The heat physically damages the hair follicle, rendering it unable to produce hair, while a cooling device delivers bursts of coolant to chill and protect the overlying treated skin.

One of our physicians will carefully and skillfully move the handheld device over the treatment area, ensuring both safety and effectiveness. The device does not emit one continuous beam, but fires pulses for targeted precision.

The laser hair removal procedure is relatively quick, and the discomfort is well tolerated on average. With multiple treatments, the results of reduction can be long-term.

Where can laser hair removal be used?

We can perform laser hair removal on almost any area of the body. The most common treatment sites include:

  • Underarms
  • Bikini
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Back

For safety reasons, the laser is not suitable for shaping eyebrows. The laser used in this process should remain a minimum distance from the eyes to minimize risk of exposure.

Does laser hair removal work on all hair and skin types?

Because the laser energy is attracted to pigment in the hair root, laser hair removal can only be most effective on dark hair. Blonde, red, gray, or white hair does not contain enough dark pigment for the laser to work effectively.

Conversely, darker pigmented skin can also absorb the laser energy, leading to unwanted side effects. Darker-skinned or suntanned patients are not suitable candidates for our hair laser. Our laser hair removal process is appropriate for dark hair on patients with light-to-medium skin tones who are not tan at the time of treatment.

What can I expect during laser hair removal treatment in West Orange, NJ?

Laser hair removal is performed with a handheld device and safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. As the device passes over the treatment area, you'll feel a short pulse of cooling spray to protect the skin, followed by a laser pulse.

Some patients may feel a discomfort with the laser pulse, similar to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. The cooling portion of the laser hair removal treatment will minimize this effect. If you have sensitive skin, we may use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment, as the topical anesthetic we recommend requires one hour to be effective. *

Laser hair removal can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Following your session, the treated area may be pink or red with little bumps or swelling around the hair follicle. These bumps indicate that the hair follicle has responded to the treatment, and they will usually disappear within a day or two. The treated hair may take several days to fall out after the treatment session.

Laser hair removal is consistently among the top five most performed cosmetic procedures in the United States each year, and regularly tops the list of noninvasive treatments. There are no injections or incisions necessary.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

You will likely need more than one laser hair removal treatment session to get the results you are looking for. This is because the laser hair removal process is only effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase.

Every follicle moves through several phases, and not all follicles are in the same phase at the same time. For about three months, a follicle can rest in what is known as the telogen phase. During this time, it readies itself for active growth. The end of this period is marked by an old hair falling out, pushed up by a new hair on its way up.

The next period is known as the anagen phase, which is the technical term for a follicle's period of growth. This phase can last for years, and typically 85 percent of all of a person's hairs will be in anagen at one time. Laser hair removal impacts only hairs in this phase. It may take several sessions to treat all the hairs while they are in this stage. Note that coarser and darker hair responds better to treatment than fine hair. *

In the two-week-long catagen phase, a follicle shrinks and begins the process of ejecting a hair that has finished growing. Once this point in the cycle is completed, the follicle rests, then begins active growth again.

The bikini area and underarms typically achieve an 85 to 95 percent reduction in dark hair after four to six treatments. Laser hair removal on the lip or chin can require at least six to 10 treatments.

How should I prepare for laser hair removal?

Since this treatment focuses on pigment, you should avoid any sun exposure that can darken your skin in the weeks before your scheduled session. You should also delay laser hair removal until any existing tan has faded, including color from a spray tan.

Forcefully removing a hair can damage its follicle, impeding the laser hair removal process. Refrain from plucking, tweezing, waxing, or otherwise pulling out any hairs in the area to be treated for four to six weeks before your sessions. Also avoid bleaching or coloring the hair to be lasered for two to three weeks prior to your appointment.

In other words, the hair to be removed should be its natural, everyday color, as should the skin around it.

If you have questions or concerns about whether the laser hair removal treatment will work for your particular hair or skin color, you can ask the Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care team at your consultation.

Is laser hair removal a long lasting treatment?

Yes! Laser hair removal is FDA approved for long lasting hair removal. You can expect an 80 to 90 percent reduction in hair growth in the treated area (some anatomic areas do even better!) *. Following your initial series of treatments, some hair growth may still be present, usually in the form of a few fine stray hairs or a persistent spot or patch.

New hair may occasionally grow in again after the old hair falls out, though if this happens, the new growth should be lighter and finer than the original hair, making it less noticeable.

A touch-up treatment every six to 12 months can help maintain largely hair-free results, and can be scheduled as necessary with the Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care team.

Are there side effects?

Risks with laser hair removal are minimal and may include bruising, redness, blistering, and swelling in the treated area, which usually do not last more than a few days *. In rare cases, permanent side effects, such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or scarring, may occur. Avoiding sun exposure before and after your treatment sessions greatly reduces the risk of side effects.

What does laser hair removal cost?

Every treatment session will be different, depending on the patient and his or her specific aesthetic goals. Cost will depend on the numbers of areas to be treated and their size, as well as the total number of sessions needed to achieve the desired results. All of this can be discussed at your laser hair removal consultation.

What kind of laser do you use for hair removal in West Orange?

The efficacy of laser hair removal depends upon the skill and experience of the doctor and the choice and availability of different laser technologies used for the procedure. At Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care in Livingston, we use the GentleLASE® PRO. Fast, precise, and more comfortable for our New Jersey patients, it is considered by many to be the "gold standard" in laser hair removal equipment.

The GentleLASE® PRO features a Dynamic Cooling Device that rapidly cools the skin in the milliseconds before the laser pulses to treat the follicle. The unique laser hair removal system minimizes patient discomfort without sacrificing high-quality results. *

Do you use lasers for anything else?

In addition to laser hair removal, Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care offers laser technology for blood vessel removal, since heat energy causes unwanted visible vessels to wither away, leaving behind clearer skin. Talk to the team to learn more about these options, as well as Fraxel® skin resurfacing and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacials, We also offer light and heat based skin tightening to firm up sagging jowls and necklines as well as heat based treatments such as Vanquish body contouring and MiraDry sweat reduction.

What other treatments can I consider?

The desire to minimize your underarm hair often goes hand in hand with the desire to reduce sweat and related odors. A miraDry® treatment efficiently disables sweat glands that are typically tamed by deodorants and antiperspirants. The staff at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care can explain the best treatment plan for patients seeking to radically change their approach to dealing with underarm sweat and odor by cutting back the cycle of constant shaving and application of products. The noninvasive approach available in Livingston ensures that patients can enjoy the benefits of their procedures without the risks or down time associated with surgical-based solutions.

The ultimate results from laser hair removal may inspire you to make other cosmetic changes, too. Patients looking to improve the appearance of wrinkled skin, in addition to reducing their body hair can enjoy the effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic, which temporarily prevents wrinkles from appearing at key points where muscle contractions often reveal them. Juvéderm® and other dermal fillers can also treat wrinkles by filling them in to smooth out skin for months at a time *.

We can discuss how various treatments can combine and complement each other at your consultation.
