How does BOTOX® work?

Wrinkles are caused by the myriad facial expressions we make throughout the day. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. When you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow's feet. Over time, these wrinkles can become quite deep.

Nerve Signal
Figure 1 - Wrinkles are formed on the surface of the skin when the nerves signal muscles beneath the skin to contract as we form facial expressions. Repeated contraction of facial muscles eventually lead to permanent fine lines and wrinkles.*
Botox Works
Figure 2 - Botox® works by temporarily relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles by blocking nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract thereby reducing or smoothing dynamic wrinkles that form on the skin.*

BOTOX® works by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. By temporarily reducing the activity of the injected muscles, the skin has the chance to smooth out naturally.

Botox Muscle
Figure 3 - For patients who want BOTOX®, New Jersey's Drs. Spey and Hartman recommend they choose a medical professional with the training, know how, and experience necessary to ensure proper placement of injections. BOTOX® works when it precisely targets and relaxes the muscles that cause certain wrinkles, such as the corrugator supercilii, which can push the frown lines into folds. A skin expert with a thorough knowledge of the underlying muscles is ideal to administer BOTOX®, especially considering that such knowledge is crucial to both aesthetics and safety. While BOTOX® has an excellent track record, it is a powerful prescription and medication that should be injected by someone with skill and anatomical understanding to preserve a patient's natural, beautiful appearance and protect the patient's health. Not only can the injectable staying in its intended location minimize the possibility of unwanted effects impacting other muscles, it can maximize the desired aesthetic results.

BOTOX® can do all of this because of its active ingredient: a protein refined from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which is purified, and carefully measured out into appropriate doses. Its safety has been proven by numerous clinical trials, peer-reviewed articles, and years of use.

Where does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® can be used as a preventative and corrective measure to improve the look of moderate-to-severe facial lines on the forehead and around the eyes. BOTOX® is indicated for the treatment of:

  • glabellar lines (frown lines)
  • lateral canthal lines (crow's feet)

Glabellar lines are better known as frown lines, which develop on the forehead due to repeated scowling or similar expressions. These frequently appear as two vertical lines that resemble the number 11. Treating frown lines typically requires five injections: four into the forehead's corrugator muscles and one into the procerus muscle.

Lateral canthal lines fan out from the outside corner of each eye, and their shape has led people to give them the name of crow's feet. Treating these typically takes three injections into the orbicularis muscle on the left side, and three into the same muscle on the right side, for six total.

BOTOX® has other applications, too, and can be used for a variety of cosmetic and medical uses.

Will BOTOX® make me look unexpressive?

No! It's a common misconception that BOTOX® will make you unable to show facial expressions. Nor will it cause your forehead to go numb—BOTOX® has no effect on sensory nerves.

BOTOX® is a technique-sensitive treatment. In other words, the skill of the injector will determine the final result. Our doctors are licensed medical experts in facial anatomy and have extensive training and experience in BOTOX® injections. We customize our BOTOX® treatments for each patient, taking into account your eyebrow shape, facial structure, and dimension and length of forehead to create beautiful, natural-looking results.

The important thing to remember is that you will still look like you, able to express yourself and a full range of emotions. You will just be able to do so without worrying whether every raise of your eyebrows, wink, or smile is revealing telltale lines in your skin.

What can I expect during my treatment?

BOTOX® injections at our New Jersey office are performed with an ultra-fine needle. Some patients report feeling a "pinch" during the injection. Anyone concerned about sensation in the targeted areas can talk to our team about numbing the skin with ice or a topical cream.

The procedure typically takes less than 15 minutes, and many patients opt to have BOTOX® treatment the same day as their consultation. Following the injection, most people resume their normal activities immediately.

Figure 4 - BOTOX® is one of the most popular cosmetic dermatology treatments available at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care in New Jersey. Patients choose it for its reputation and results, since it has a track record of millions of safe and effective applications. Dr. Deborah Spey and Dr. Rachael Hartman use it for a variety of aesthetic corrections, daily helping patients to temporarily smooth wrinkles on their upper face.*
  • FOREHEAD LINES: BOTOX® is FDA approved to relax the muscles that cause horizontal furrows that appear when the eyebrows are raised.
  • EYEBROW SHAPING: Since muscles control the position of the eyebrows, they can be manipulated into settling not too low, not too high, but just right.
  • FROWN LINES: These glabellar lines are wrinkles that form with every scowl, but can be avoided with precisely targeted injections.
  • CROW'S FEET: BOTOX® can temporarily smooth out fine lines that crinkle the skin at the side of either eye.
  • BUNNY LINES: Scrunching the nose like a rabbit looking for carrots can reveal these wrinkles. If the muscles can't contract, the lines won't show.

What happens after my treatment session?

Since BOTOX® is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, administered in around 10 minutes, it requires no lengthy recuperation or down time afterward. Some people schedule their injections on a lunch break, since patients can resume their typical daily schedule immediately after their session.

Some aftercare may be necessary, but the Advanced Dermatology and Skin Care team will provide any necessary information on keeping the injection site clean, avoiding direct sunlight, and other tips to maximize health and aesthetic results including not touching the treated areas for four hours after treatment.

How long will the results of my treatment last?

You may begin to notice results within about three to four days. The maximum visible effects will be achieved by two weeks and generally last for three months. Some patients at our New Jersey practice experience results that may last longer.

BOTOX® is not a permanent treatment. To maintain your new look, repeat treatments will be required. Results may vary.

Are there any side effects to watch for?

As with any treatment or procedure, side effects are possible. A very small percentage of patients who participated in BOTOX®-based studies reported some frown-line-related eyelid dropping (3 percent) and crow's feet-related eyelid swelling (1 percent). There were also some reports of bruising at the injection site, headache, and other effects. The Advanced Dermatology and Skin Care team can address any patients' questions related to side effects to watch for.

What does BOTOX® cost?

This is a common question we receive from patients interested in BOTOX® treatments, but since every patient is different, there is no easy answer. The wide range of treatments, each requiring a specific and precisely measured amount of the injectable, means the topic of cost is best discussed during the consultation, when both the doctor and the patient will have a better idea of the scope of the treatment.

Patients interested in learning more about the Brilliant Distinctions® can get more information about the rewards program that offers points for each BOTOX® treatment received. These points translate into savings on future treatments of BOTOX® and more.

Who is the ideal BOTOX® patient?

BOTOX® works well for any adult who wants to temporarily address facial wrinkles and certain other cosmetic conditions mentioned here. Men and women alike enjoy its benefits.

Be sure to openly and honestly discuss your medical history during your consultation, as pregnant women and people dealing with certain neurological diseases should avoid BOTOX®, as should anyone with an allergy to the injectable's ingredients or a skin infection in the area to be treated. Patients who recently received botulinum-toxin-based injections of any kind (including non-BOTOX® treatments) should alert the doctor and refrain from getting any more injections until a suitable amount of time has passed.

What treatments complement BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is ideal for smoothing out lines and wrinkles, but some patients find that they want to further develop a more youthful appearance by adding volume to hollow or sunken areas that have developed over time. Talk to the Advanced Dermatology team about the best treatments available to address all of your cosmetic desires.

Voluma® is used to round out the area known as the apple of the cheek, a change that can also provide a subtle "lift" to the lower portion of the face as it pulls up sagging skin. Restylane Silk® augments thin lips to give them more definition.

Are there alternatives to BOTOX®?

While there are other cosmetic injectables that act on muscles in the same way BOTOX® does, it remains the standard in the field and is the most popular aesthetic treatment available around the world today.

Patients seeking another approach to reducing the appearance of certain wrinkles may consider Juvéderm®, which also addresses lip and marionette lines. Rather than keeping muscles from contracting, however, this injectable works as a dermal filler to smooth the skin by temporarily adding volume.

Fraxel® skin resurfacing can smooth fine lines and wrinkles, as well as brown spots, uneven skin texture, and other sun damage.

The ideal treatment depends on patient preference and the doctor's assessment of the patient's facial features, skin condition, aesthetic goals, and other factors. Together, the team will work to deliver the desired results using the best products and treatments available.
